What Reiki Actually Is (And Isn’t)

July 26, 2026 · 2 min read · priyankatarotapple@gmail.com

Reiki gets described online in wildly different ways — everything from a mystical cure-all to pure pseudoscience, depending on where you land. Neither extreme is a particularly useful place to start if you’re actually curious about trying it. Here’s a more grounded description of what a session involves and what it’s reasonable to expect.

What it is

Reiki is a gentle, hands-on practice involving light touch or near-body positioning across a series of points, typically while you lie down fully clothed in a calm, quiet setting. The practice is rooted in the idea of working with the body’s own energy to support relaxation and a sense of balance. Sessions are unhurried, usually 45–60 minutes, and require nothing active from you beyond lying still and breathing.

What it isn’t

Reiki isn’t a medical treatment, and no responsible practitioner will present it as one. It isn’t a diagnosis tool, it doesn’t replace medication or clinical care, and it doesn’t come with guaranteed outcomes. It also isn’t something that requires you to believe in anything specific for the session itself to be a calm, restorative hour — skepticism doesn’t disqualify you from trying it.

What people commonly experience

  • A deep sense of physical relaxation, sometimes drowsiness or a light sleep.
  • Warmth or a tingling sensation in areas being worked on.
  • Occasionally, an unexpected emotional response, which usually passes quickly.
  • Just as often: simple, uneventful stillness — which is a completely normal response too.

Where it fits

The most honest way to think about Reiki is as a complementary practice for rest and reflection — a dedicated hour of stillness with a specific structure around it, offered alongside, never instead of, whatever medical or psychological care you might already be receiving. Approached that way, without inflated claims on either side, it tends to be exactly what it says on the tin: a gentle, restorative session.
